University of Leeds

The University of Leeds is in the top 100 of the THE (Times Higher Education) World Reputation Rankings for 2012, coming ninth in the UK and is one of only 18 UK universities to appear in the top 100 of the QS world rankings in 2012.  It is a member of the Russell Group of UK research-intensive universities and part of the Worldwide Universities Network (WUN), which comprises 18 research-intensive institutions spanning six continents.

In terms of numbers, the University has over 30,000 students from 141 countries, of which almost 24 000 are undergraduates and over 6000 are postgraduates. With nearly 8000 members of staff representing 103 different nationalities, the University is the third largest employer in Leeds, contributing around £1.23bn a year to the local economy.

The University has produced 101 ‘spin-out’ companies since 1995, the second largest number in the higher education sector in the UK, and currently has 44 active spin-out companies. Links with industry & business are very important to the University of Leeds and in addition to the 36% of academics who are involved in applied research or as consultants to industry with an estimated contract value of £59m,  it has 21 active Knowledge Transfer Partnerships, the third highest number in the UK and the third highest in the Russell Group.
